The Malaysian Army has an air defense capability consisting of 24 towed guns (35mm or 40mm) and some shoulder-fired Javelin and Starburst missiles. Seeking improvement, it plans to buy a number of medium-range missiles, and says it has narrowed the field to the British Jernas (the export version of Rapier-2) or the Thales Crotale New Generation. The Russians are making an unsolicited bid with their Tor-M1 and S-2500 systems.--Stephen V Cole
