About a hundred times a week, an aircraft hits a bird. Half the time it’s a military aircraft. These collisions kill some 400 people a year and destroy over 400 aircraft. Some 99 percent of the US bird strikes involve birds protected by US law. That may explain why some 80 percent of bird strikes involving non-military aircraft go unreported.
