Japan expects the overall operational readiness of its Air Self-Defense force to improve over the next few years as new F-2 close air support fighters (modified F-16s) replace older F-1s. Japan currently has 203 F-15s, 103 F-4Es, 32 F-2s and 27 F-1s in operational service.--Stephen V Cole
