The Czech Republic air forces new jets from Sweden, JAS-39 Gripen, will be armed with the AIM-120 AMRAAM (Advanced Medium-Range Air-to-Air Missile) air-to-air missiles. These Medium Range Missiles will significantly strengthen the jet's combat capability. The Czech Air Force already use AIM-9 Sidewinder missiles, which are carried by the subsonic  L-159 ALCA aircraft, and by the new Gripens as well. The Gripens will also be armed with a Mauser BK 27,  27mm cannon, with 120 rounds of ammo. The two seat version D, is not provided with the 27mm cannon.

The Czech Republic bought 20 'Raytheon' AIM-120C AMRAAM missiles and 4,000 rounds for 20mm cannon ammunition for $25 million. The new jets will be delivered to Caslav Air Force Base in Czech Republic this month. 


AMRAAM missiles are used by the US Air Force, US Navy and Air Forces of other member states of North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) as well. AMRAAM missiles were also recently ordered by Hungary. AMRAAM missiles have become an integral part of many jets such as F-15, F-16, F-14 and F/A-18, Eurofighter Typhoon, German F-4, British Sea Harrier and prospectively also the most modern American fighter F/A-22 Raptor.
