The US Army plans to spend $800 million over the next five years replacing the 1500hp turbine engines in the M1 tank fleet with new 1500hp diesels. The move will save $7 billion over 20 years by reducing fuel consumption by 35% and the need to buy replacement parts by 42%. The Army is studying whether it can use the same engine in the Crusader artillery system, as this would save money and simplify logistics. --Stephen V Cole
