Jordan has decided to upgrade its M60 tanks in three stages, and in battalion-sized batches.

@ Phase-I consists of a new fire control system which includes stabilization and a laser rangefinder. This will cost about one million dollars per tank.

@ Phase-2 will include replacing the 105mm cannon with a 120mm L50 smoothbore compact tank cannon bought from RUAG.

@ Phase-3 includes upgrading the engine to 950 horsepower and improving the suspension.
Jordan has hired Alvis to upgrade its Scorpion light tanks and other vehicles of this family. The upgrade includes a diesel engine and various minor improvements. Jordan bought used vehicles including Scorpion tanks, Spartan APCs, Sultan command vehicles, Samaritan ambulances, and Samson recovery vehicles from Belgium. A few old Scorpions which Iraq captured from Iran and gave to Jordan won't be upgraded as they are in too bad a shape. --Stephen V Cole
