January 27, 2006:
While the Communist Chinese have been recruiting women soldiers from the beginning (1920s), Taiwan is just now beginning to. The first hundred female recruits have been accepted, with 35 going to the army, 40 to the air force and 25 to the Defense Ministry's Logistics Command. In the PLA (communist "People Liberation Army") women serve mainly inmedical, administrative, political, communications and scientific jobs. A similar pattern is expected in the Taiwanese armed forces, which hopes to recruit 10,000 women eventually.
