Several veterans of the New Zealand Navy have sued their government for damage to their health resulting from being sent to observe British nuclear tests in the 1950s. The New Zealand government has pointed out that they can already file claims for medical reimbursement and disability under the existing War Pensions Act. Many governments have faced similar legal claims and have shown that statistically most (over 90%) of those who supposedly caught cancer as a result of such tests would have caught it anyway from other causes, and that it is impossible to determine which of them are the "extra" cases that came as a result of nuclear exposure.--Stephen V Cole
