For several months, U.S. intelligence agencies have been seeking out the email addresses of senior Iraqi military officials and sending them emails urging them to consider switching sides. Some of the messages suggested that the officers contact UN officials in Iraq to arrange defection. Iraqi secret police quickly became aware of this when some of the recipients turned over the messages. Some of Iraqis Internet access lines have had email blocked as a result. Internet access in Iraq is tightly restricted, although foreigners can dial an access number in a nearby nation to get on the net. Iraq has apparently not yet installed the kind of Internet monitoring equipment found in nations like China or Saudi Arabia. But this use of email against Iraq is yet another psychological warfare weapon being used against the current Iraqi government.
