It was amazing how much play the Koran desecration in Guantanamo story got. Consider the facts. The U.S. Department of Defense handed out 1,600 copies of the Koran to prisoners there. The Korans were often carried by prisoners to many of the 28,000 interrogation sessions conducted so far. In all that, there were only twenty verifiable cases of mishandling of the Koran. However, 75 percent of these desecrations were by prisoners themselves, and three of the five attributed to guards were apparently accidental. Meanwhile, each year, thousands of copies of the Christian Bible are destroyed or desecrated by Moslems world wide. Anyone trying to bring a bible into Saudi Arabia will have it taken away and the Holy Scripture destroyed. Moreover, Islamic radicals attacking mosques, has destroyed hundreds of Korans. Yet five desecrations of the Koran in Guantanamo became a major story. Why? Depends on who you ask. Islamic radicals, and Moslems in general, say that Guantanamo is the tip of the iceberg, a small part of a Christian effort to destroy Islam. Western opponents to the removal of the Baath Party by coalition troops in 2003, say the Koran desecration is another example of a war on Islam. Then again, there may be a lot of lying and deception going on, for al Qaeda training documents urge captured terrorists to automatically claim, to any journalists they can reach, that they have been tortured and that their Islamic religious beliefs were desecrated. Who you believe apparently depends on what you believe in begin with.
