John Magaw, head of the Transportation Security Agency, was recently fired for several reasons. He was an empire builder in a time of austere budgets, he had an aloof management style at a time when getting in touch with the feelings of other agencies was in vogue, he upset the airline industry by not listening to their concerns about profit, and he annoyed Congress by not keeping it informed. His replacement will be James M Loy, former head of the Coast Guard. His background, combining military, law enforcement, transportation, and security skills is highly regarded.--Stephen V Cole
