Trouble for Marc Ravalomanana and his new Madagascar government? Maybe, maybe not. The brand-new African Union (AU), testing new political wings, has refused to recognize Ravalmanana as president of Madagascar. The AU claims it's reaffirming the principle that it won't recognize governments who obtained power by unconstitutional means. Whether this applies to the Ravalomanana government is debatable, since the recounts show that Ravalomanana won last December's election. The AU is calling for new elections in Madagascar. The first reactions on Madagascar? One island newspaper says the AU position is more about the tight friends former President Didier Ratsiraka has among the elites and oligarchs that rule so many African nations. Stay tuned.
