Women were allowed to serve aboard warplanes and warships during the 1990s, but the regulations that enabled this also specifically prohibited women from serving in ground combat units (infantry, armor, recon and artillery), or serving in combat brigades as part of direct support units (non-combat units that were a part of the brigade). However, the new brigade organization means that women who served in division support units are now in the same kind of unit that is now part of the new brigades. In effect, nothing is different except that the support units are part of combat brigades, rather than a division transportation or maintenance unit, and that puts them in violation of the 1990s regulations. So the army lawyers and lobbyists are working to change the rules, so women wont have to be pulled out of the support units being transferred from division to brigade control.
