The United States has 182,664 reserve and National Guard troops on active duty, with 85 percent of them being from the army. This gives the army a total active duty strength of over 650,000 troops (including about 30,000 who are being held in service by a "stop loss" order that prevents retirements or leaving after service obligation is up). About 20 percent of all active duty army troops are deployed in Iraq and Afghanistan. The army has a total strength (active and reserve) of 1.2 million troops.
