Austria has invited NATO troops onto its soil for the first time, as it hosted the Best Effort 2001 exercise (under the Partnership for Peace program) on 10-21 September. The exercise included troops from Canada, Greece, Italy, Poland, Turkey, Britain, the US, Austria, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Bulgaria, Georgia, Latvia, Lithuania, Macedonia, Moldova, Slovakia, Ukraine, and Uzbekistan.--Stephen V Cole
