The U.S. Navy is having a hard time holding on to it's most highly trained technicians. Dislike for constant six month sea tours, and tempted by civilian jobs that pay up to twice as much money, many sailors are leaving. To stem this exodus, the navy is offering bonuses if sailors in key specialties will reenlist for six years. The bonuses tend to equal a year or two of salary. Thus bonuses of up to $60,000 are being paid out. Sailors are often reluctant to leave the navy, because of the job security and the pension after twenty years of service. But if service becomes too onerous, and civilian pay gets high enough, they leave.
