NATO has asked for bids to supply new engines for its 17 E-3A AWACS planes (and the three cargo-trainers). Boeing is offering the CFM56-2 which is already used by French, British, and Saudi E-3s. EADS is offering the P&W JT8D-219, a commercial engine which would cut fuel use by 10% compared to the current engines.--Stephen V Cole
