Quickbird, a commercial photographic satellite that tips the scales at 2,270 pounds, was launched from Vandenberg AFB on 18 Oct. Photographs from this spacecraft will be able to pick up objects two feet in diameter on black-and-white prints, and eight feet in diameter on color images, the best resolution of any commercial satellite. --Stephen V Cole
