The Navy's prized Extended Range Guided Munition is having development troubles. Technical problems may double the $44 million development cost and delay deployment for three years until 2004. ERGM is a four-foot-long 110-pound shell fired from a naval five-inch gun. Powered by a booster rocket, it is expected to hit a 20-foot target at 65 miles. It will provide the DDG51 and DD21 destroyers with the ability to support Marines ashore.--Stephen V Cole
