Australia has donated some 22 specially-designed 32-meter Pacific Patrol Boats to 12 nations between 1987 and 1998. This cost Australia over $100 million, but built a lot of good will with neighboring smaller nations. Australia now proposes to refit each boat as it reaches the end of its 15-year design life, extending this to 30 years.--Stephen V Cole
