April 29, 2011:
The need for speed in the Israeli infantry has led to the wider use of the lightweight, compact version of their Negev 5.56mm light machine-gun. The light version is the Negev (called the Negev Commando) is less than half a kilo (one pound) lighter, but it is far more compact. The standard Negev machine-gun is 890mm (35 inches) long with the stock folded, while the Negev Commando is only 680mm (26.8 inches) long. The Commando is built for urban warfare, or fast moving infantry combat in any environment. With a 150 round drum magazine, a Negev Commando weighs 9.55 kg (21.1 pounds). That's a lot of firepower in a small weapon, especially one designed to be fired from the hip.
