The Ju-88 was the workhorse of the Luftwaffe. The Luftwaffe produced over 16,000 airframes. Of those, over 9,000 were used in a bomber role. No other Third Reich bomber comes close in numbers. The Ju-88 airframe flew in several roles, but perhaps the oddest use was in the role of a guided bomb. Ju-88’s were mated with a fighter like the Bf-109 on top. The Mistel (Mistletoe), the name of the mated pair, flew to the target site. The fighter would uncouple, and then the Ju-88 would be guided into the target. The Luftwaffe had 250 Mistels built. Of those, an unknown number meet with limited success in combat.
