So far, 22,000 US bombs have been dropped in the Afghan war. Some 60 percent of them were smart bombs. Because of the higher proportion of smart bombs, some 75 percent of the intended targets were hit. In the earlier (1999) campaign against Serbia and Kosovo, the accuracy was only about 40 percent (but only about 30 percent of the bombs were of the smart variety). Moreover, in Afghanistan, we had more people on the ground spotting targets, and the general lack of trees made spotting the enemy easier in Afghanistan as well.
