A year ago, American air attacks began on Taliban and al Qaeda targets. Since then, the Taliban are out of power, but still around, in the shadows and deep in the countryside. Al Qaeda has largely fled the country. But eternal aspects of Afghanistan remain; warlords, a gun culture, massive corruption and widespread poverty. Afghanistan is still, as it has long been, the poorest nation in Asia.
