The army says it found men from Pakistan, Afghanistan and Yemen among the 40 rebels it has killed during the last two weeks. The army has been searching for rebel camps in the Aures mountains of eastern Algeria. The foreigners often have al Qaeda connections, or fought with Algerians against Russians in Afghanistan during the 1980s.

So far this month, rebel violence has left 114 dead, including 70 soldiers and policemen.
