Oil feeds the army. The Angolan government announced that the Kuito field (a "deep water" offshore oil filed off Angola's Cabinda province) has started producing crude. Chevron operates the field, with the Angolan state oil firm Sonangol, Italy's AGIP, and France's TotalFina as partners. Ultimately the field could produce as much as 100,000 barrels a day. UNITA relies on diamond sales to arm its forces. The oil market is bigger. While it's misleading to say that Chevron, AGIP, and TotalFina are better allies than Zambia and Debeers (the South African diamond conglomerate), it's not completely misleading.
