On August 8 UNITA guerrillas attacked the town of Catete, 60 kilometers from Luanda. A government (MPLA) source said that government soldiers killed ten UNITA rebels in the ensuing firefight. Subsequent reports said that the UNITA rebels killed from ten to 12 civilians when they attacked the town. This is another "statement" by UNITA, a demonstration that it is still able to launch attacks in the vicinity of the capital.
Aug 1, 2000; UNITA is at least trying to create the impression that it's back in business inside Angola. A UNITA spokesman claimed that UNITA troops had killed 261 Angola government Troops during the last week. UNITA claimed that its forces engaged the Angolan government (MPLA) in seven different provinces.
