A spokesman for the Angolan Armed Forces (FAA- armed forces of the Angolan MPLA government) claimed that a new offensive had pushed UNITA out of "strongholds" in central Angola. The spokesman also claimed that the FAA was directing a new offensive into UNITA positions in the "diamond areas" of southern and eastern Angola. This was no independent confirmation of the claims. However, on October 23, AFP quoted the Roman Catholic Church's Ecclesia radio as saying that UNITA attacked a diamond field near Cambulo. 25 people died in the attack.
