The Angolan government reported a Boeing 727, run by Airangol, the Angolan state airline, was stolen. The plane was swiped from Luandas international airport. The plane had been grounded last year and was apparently sitting off one of the main runways. A white man went to the plane and started it, then took off. There is evidence of ground crew connivance. Another report said someone had recently refueled the plane. Theft, but government officials and freelancers, is rampant in the country. There is fear that this will create more bandit gangs, which will, as happened in Sierra Leone, Ivory Coast and Liberia, develop into rebel movements. Meanwhile, all the stealing creates troops more intent on theft than training, and unable to do much about an armed rebellion.
