The main Cabinda independence group, the Patriotic Movement for the Liberation of Cabinda (MPLC), has asked for new negotiations with the Angolan government. The MPLC issued a statement that said it prefers to resolve Cabindas issue peacefully and politically. One news report said the MPLC is already in contact with the Angolan government, through both the Angolan and Portuguese embassies in the DRCs capital of Kinshasha. Earlier this year, Angola beefed up its military presence in Cabinda and conducted a sweep operation against Cabindan separatist bases along the DRC border. The enclave of Cabinda contains most of Angloas oil wealth.
