Serbia announced that it intends to impose an economic blockade on Montenegro, the other remaining republic in Yugoslavia. The blockade would be Serbia's response to what StrategyPage has called Montenegro's "slow divorce" from Serbia. Would it be effective? This could well be attempt by the Serbs to forge a "food weapon." Montenegro grows around 25% of its own food and has relied on Serbia for the rest. But the US and Western Europe could easily supply Montenegro with foodstuffs. In terms of the usual aim of an economic blockade --strangling an economy -- Serbia's economy is far weaker than Montenegro's. The Serb military would have to physically close Montenegro's borders, which would mean "blockade" had become "invasion."
