Watch how this one develops. Turkey said that the dry weather had lowered the water level behind its Euphrates River dams and that it would have to cut back on the amount of water released. Turkey claimed that it had been releasing twice the amount of water it had agreed to release. The Turk spokesman was quoted as saying that Turkey will lower the release rate to 500 cubic meters a second, which was the rate agreed to with Syria in 1987. In the past, Syria has threatened Turkey with "reprisals" if the Turks decreased the water flow.
