: On September 29 Turkey's national security council said that if the US Congress passes a resolution condemning the 1915 "Turkish genocide of Armenians in the Ottoman Empire" moves toward a new Turk-Armenian rapprochement would be "harmed." The Turks blame "militant Armenian circles" in the US for pushing the resolution. On October 4, the Turkish army's chief of staff "postponed" a trip to the US to emphasize Turk displeasure with the resolution. ON October 5 the Turks dropped the big political bomb. The Turkish parliament said it might not renew US basing rights at the big Turkish Incirlik airbase. Incirlik is the key base in enforcing the northern "no fly zone" over Iraq. Here's some of the text of that Turk parliamentary statement: "If the (US) House of Representatives approves the said (genocide) resolution, the Turkish parliament will evaluate the extension of the mandate of Operation Northern Watch (ONW) in the light of changing circumstances."
