President Karimov of Uzbekistan has called for his Army to be reformed and made more mobile and compact. Independent battalions are to be set up for each of the five military districts. The Army currently has 70,000 troops, and is organized to include one mechanized division, one artillery brigade, one airborne brigade, and one combat helicopter regiment. There are about 300 tanks, 700 armored vehicles, and 800 artillery pieces.--Stephen V Cole
