While food is getting from Uzbekistan to Afghanistan by river barge, the Uzbeks refuse to allow the only bridge to be reopened. The Uzbeks want guarantees that the road on the Afghan side is free of Taliban soldiers. The UN wants the bridge opened because some 25,000 tons of humanitarian aid a month can be moved across it. There are still groups of heavily armed Taliban operating along the Uzbek and Tajik border.
