Some 600 FARC guerillas attacked a naval base near the Panamanian border, killing 43 marines and wounding many more. The navy claimed at least 41 rebel dead.  The base contains about 115 marines, who patrol a coastal order heavily populated with drug and arms smugglers. The rebels also attacked a local police station and killed two police officers.
