  Some 600 FARC rebels attacked an electronics installation in the southwest. The base was guarded by sixty marines, of whom six were killed, as well as five other military personnel and a civilian. The defeated rebels lost some 40 dead. The site was described as a "telecommunications facility." The government is known to be monitoring rebel communications from such sites.
