In several battles with rebels over the weekend, 44 rebels were killed and 20 captured. Three soldiers died as did five civilians. The army said that some 2,000 FARC rebels were launching an offensive over a wide area. The army moved first and captured seven rebel camps and caused the rebels to retreat into the mountains.
