After nearly two weeks of operations, troops broke the siege of the southwestern town of Toribio. Three soldiers and at least 16 FARC rebels were killed. In other actions in the same valley, six rebels were killed and 17 captured. For years, there was not much government control in this remote area. But in the last year, the army has been returning, and going up against the local FARC forces and drug gangs.
