India-Pakistan: October 9, 2001

Pro-Taliban demonstrations in the northwest Pakistan continued. Police began using force against the increasingly violent demonstrators and arrested three prominent pro-Taliban religious leaders.  The most violent demonstrations (with 10-15,000 participants) continue to be in Quetta, a Pushtun town on the Afghan border. Pakistan is against American support for the Northern Alliance, mainly because the Northern Alliance is the same group that led the government the Pakistani supported Taliban overthrew in 1996. The Pakistanis fear the Northern Alliance would not have the support of enough Afghans to form a stable government. This, the Pakistanis fear, would lead to more years of warlord anarchy in Afghanistan. Moreover, the Northern Alliance is largely non-Pushtun, and Pakistan contains over ten million Pushtuns who would also be against a non-Pushtun government in Afghanistan.
