Many Pakistani politicians have positioned themselves as Islamic radicals in order to get elected recently. It's all for show, however, as most Pakistanis want nothing to do with a government run by religious leaders. But the despair over entrenched corruption and a stagnant economy make Islamic radicalism the only likely solution to the problems. Backing the Islamic radicals, however, brings Pakistan into conflict with India (over Islamic radicals trying to "cleanse" Kashmir of all non-Moslems) and the US (over Islamic radicals trying to regain power in Afghanistan.) Pakistan's future thus appears rather grim.
