Peace talks between India and Pakistan have gotten nowhere on the central issue of Kashmir. Pakistan still calls terrorism in Indian Kashmir by Islamic radicals the work of "freedom fighters" while assassination attempts against the president of Pakistan by Islamic radicals "terrorism." In southeast India, seven communist rebels were killed in clashes with the police.

In Karachi, Pakistan, police found and removed a van containing over a ton of explosives found outside the US consulate.
