Separatist rebels in Aceh province suffered at least nine dead from a government offensive to pacify the area. The government refused to allow an independence referendum in Aceh. But since May, at least 217 people have been killed, and over 100,000 made refugees, by the separatist violence.

August 5; Fighting flared up in Ambon once more, with two more dead. Apparently some 80 have been killed and over 140 injured in Ambon due to the recent violence. Over eight thousand people have fled the island of Batam to escape fighting that has killed 17 and injured many more.

August 4; Fighting in Ambon has died down, but many of the local Chinese have fled the area. Some 24 people died and more than 160 homes were destroyed.
