An Australian government report states that the East Timor peacekeeping operation would not have succeeded without substantial assistance from the United States. Although only a handful of American communications troops were directly involved in the operation, the US provided extensive communications, logistics, transportation and intelligence services. A US Navy landing ship carrying 1800 marines was also stationed offshore during the early phases of the operation. Meanwhile, in Aceh, a policeman was killed by rebels. Seven civilians died during police operations.
