After a weeklong standoff, navy personnel killed three Aceh rebels who had hijacked a tanker in the Makassar Straits (in eastern Indonesia) and were demanding $53,000 to release the ship and its crew. No sailors or crew members were killed in the rescue operation. Piracy in the narrow waters between Indonesia and Malaysia (Straits of Malacca) has caused Malaysia to form a Coast Guard. The new organization will regularly patrol the Straits of Malacca and, basically, try to eliminate piracy. Two special commando units will work with the coast guard to deal with hostage rescue and other dangerous situations.
