Turkish press sources reported that Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) guerrillas were battling Kurdistan Workers party (PKK) rebels inside northern Iraq. The PUK has become essentially a Turk ally against the PKK. The Turk sources quoted a PUK spokesman as saying that PKK fighters had moved into PUK territory from Iraqi-controlled territory to the south. The implication is that the PKK moved into PUK territory with at least the tacit agreement of Saddam's government in Baghdad.
