Liberia: July 9, 2000

For the third time in two years, leftover rebels from the civil war (that ended in 1997) have invaded northern Liberia from bases in Guinea. These rebels are members of the Khran and Mandigo tribe and belonged to the ULIMO-J and ULIMO-K factions. These groups did not accept the 1997 agreement and fled to Guinea where they have prepared to restart the civil war. The rebels invaded in April and August of 1999, but were defeated. The rebels are thought to number 500-1,000 armed fighters.
