In several clashes, ten rebels and a civilian were killed. A large quantity of arms and munitions were recovered. The national police force is trying to recruit 2,000 retired army men for two year contracts. Most army veterans in Nepal have retired from long service in British or Indian Gurkha battalions.

India has some 70,000 troops on the Nepalese border. The main purpose of this is to prevent Nepalese rebels from smuggling in weapons or other equipment. India is providing material and political aid to the Nepalese government, for use against the rebels, as well.
