Vigilante groups are turning to politics and becoming the basis of warlord armies. The largest group, a coalition called the Bakassi Boys, have become a major law enforcement operation in three southern states. Smaller vigilante groups are operating elsewhere in the south, while religious bases groups impose Sharia (Islamic) law in the north. Local politicians are making deals with the vigilantes, to try and avoid competition from the violent and popular peacekeepers.
