In the last week, Russia has suffered at least 33 dead in the fighting south of Grozny, mainly from ambushes and friendly fire (warplanes bombing Russian troops.) Russia is concentrating most of their fire on two long gorges that lead from the hills south of Grozny to the Georgian border. The Russians believe they have three to five thousand rebels trapped in these gorges. The Russians also want to control the gorges as they are the easiest way to move men and supplies north towards Grozny. While the rebels are trapped, they have access to caves and other protection from the Russian firepower. At night, the rebels move about and attack the Russians, or set up ambushes. The rebels are taking heavy casualties, but, unlike the Russians, the rebels are less likely to lose heart from heavy losses.
